Contribute and get a Tax Credit

Is it possible to make a donation to TERROS and get my money back? Yes.  Here is how it works.

Make a cash donation to TERROS and the state of Arizona will reduce the amount of individual income tax you owe equal to the amount of your donation.

Who can do this?

Any individual or married couple, who itemizes their deductions on the state tax return, qualifies for this opportunity.

What is a Qualifying Charitable Organizations?

A qualifying charitable organization is a tax exempt (501)(c)(3) organization or community action agency that allocates at least 50 percent of its budget to services that help welfare recipients or the working poor with their immediate basic needs.  Services, which must be provided and used in Arizona, may include food, clothing, shelter, cash, health care, child care, job placement and/or job training.

How do I get the credit?

A tax credit is applied to reduce, dollar-for-dollar, the individual income tax you may owe the state of Arizona. For example, if you contribute $100 to TERROS, and indicate it is a tax credit, the amount you owe the state will be reduced by $100. If you are due a refund, your refund will be increased by the amount of your contribution.

How is a tax credit different than a tax deduction?

A tax credit is significantly more beneficial than a tax deduction.  A tax credit reduces your taxes, dollar-for-dollar. A tax deduction reduces the taxable income upon which your tax liability is calculated.

Can I claim my contribution on my Federal tax return as a deduction?

Yes, in most cases, your contribution is also eligible as a tax deduction on your Federal tax return.

How much can I claim?

You can claim up to $200, if you file “single,” and up to $400, if you file “married.”

How do I claim the credit?

You, or your tax preparer, must complete Form 321 indicating TERROS as the qualifying charitable organization and the dollar amount of your contribution. TERROS will send you a letter confirming your donation.

When do I have to make my contribution?

Your contribution to TERROS must be postmarked or received by December 31, 2011.

Where do I make my contribution? You have three choices:
• Go to www.terros.org/donate
• Mail it to: TERROS Tax Credit, 3003 N Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012
• Drop off your check at any of our outpatient clinics. For locations go to www.terros.org/contact
