TERROS HIV Prevention, Confidential Testing and Counseling Services

TERROS is recognized as a leader in providing HIV prevention services.  With the mission to stop the spread of AIDS/HIV virus, TERROS HIV prevention services include street outreach to injection drug users and their sexual partners, education to persons receiving Federally funded substance abuse treatment services, HIV counseling and anonymous and confidential testing and HIV prevention outreach services to homeless persons through the TERROS Together program.

An HIV Risk Reduction Program for Homeless Substance Abusers

Homelessness.  Substance Abuse.  HIV.  TERROS targets each one of these issues through the Together HIV Prevention Program in central  Phoenix.  The program has been developed to reduce the spread of HIV through education and HIV counseling, anonymous and confidential testing and outreach and particularly prevention case management.  The Together program has a breakfast and education component.  This, combined with a shower program, has allowed the prevention specialists to work with persons who would be unlikely to seek care in a traditional healthcare setting.  The focus may be housing, emergency clothing, referral to substance abuse detoxification or medical care, or food.  Any or all of these services help assist the person in changing the behaviors.

An important component of the program is consumer input.  A Together Consumer Advisory Council offer ways to improve the program.  Says the HIV Prevention Services Manager, "the consumers have made an important contribution in strengthening the program;  they have assisted the staff in developing appropriate program expectations and we are now working on a phase program to reinforce prevention strategies."
