TERROS and Grace Lutheran Church Partnership Serves Neighbors
It‘s 7:00 A.M. in downtown Phoenix. Thirty three men and five women, who have slept the night on the streets of Phoenix, are lining up outside Grace Lutheran Church. They arrive for a one hour program on substance abuse provided by TERROS and a breakfast served from the church’s kitchen.
The program engages people in a lively discussion about their substance abuse with the hope they will make a decision to begin a personal journey of recovery. A good breakfast supports this hope.
Grace Lutheran’s Christian mission for 96 years has been to serve its neighbors. About 20 years ago, as the downtown neighborhood changed and many of its members moved to the suburbs, Grace discovered most of its neighbors were homeless persons. It decided its mission should be the same - welcome and serve its neighbors.
Many of the persons TERROS Behavioral Health serves at Grace Lutheran Church are burdened with alcohol and drug use. TERROS has been providing substance abuse prevention and treatment services in Phoenix for over forty years.
The program gets results. Here are some examples:
1) Ryan is not shooting cocaine and has started his own business.
2) Meg has her own apartment and is mostly off of drugs.
3) Jack is totally off drugs and working on reducing alcohol use.
4) Darrel is clean and sober a year and volunteers at Grace Lutheran.
The collaboration between TERROS and Grace strengthens the mission of both organizations by doing together what would be difficult to do without the partnership. It is a natural fit that maximizes the resources and expertise of both, to serve their neighbors.
