TERROS Clinician Presented at Women’s Health Expo

MarlenaPeoria outpatient clinician, Marlena Gabaldon, presented at the Arizona Women’s Health Expo at the state capitol on May 10, 2010.  The presentation was titled:  Mental Health and Women – Recognizing signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress.

Marlena helped distinguish the differences between normal everyday stress and clinical stress that may require mental health counseling and highlighted how increased stress can suppress a woman’s immune system to increase risk of illness.  She helped participants recognize ways of managing stress and anxiety properly by starting with the question “What do I have control over?”

Marlena conveyed a common stress that women feel is to help others in their lives while not taking time to care for themselves.  She shared this analogy, “What do they tell you when you are on a plane and the oxygen masks fall?  Put your mask on first so you can help others next to you.”

The presentation concluded with a guided imagery exercise. Most of the group felt quite relaxed and calm afterwards and learned a new coping skill for dealing with stress.
